Globe and Mail Illustration

I have an illustration in today's Globe and Mail. It's in the Facts and Arguments section, accompanying an opinion piece by Jeanne Beker, who (in a thoughtful departure from her more usual fashion reportage) writes about her mother's recent trip to Ottawa to lay a wreath at a ceremony commemorating Holocaust victims (Beker's mother and father were both survivors). A difficult trip ended up, through the kind offices of a friend, to be a happy one too, with an invitation from Laureen Harper, wife of the Prime Minister and a Fashion Television fan, to dinner.

Update: Looks like this particular story got bumped, as it's not in today's paper as scheduled. Maybe later in the week.

Benefits Magazine

This is an illustration for the May 2008 issue of Benefits Magazine. It's for an article about how increasingly meagre the healthcare benefits are becoming in retirement packages.

ICON5

ICON, or The Illustration Conference, is a non-profit organization of illustrators, established in 1998 to promote the use of illustration in all media. Every two years it brings together illustrators to discuss issues, hear inspiring guest speakers and take part in workshops. ICON5 will be held July 2-5, 2008 in New York City at the Roosevelt Hotel in midtown Manhattan. Registration for ICON5 is now open and can be done online, by fax, or via mail. More info here.

And 3x3 Magazine, a Gold Sponsor of this year's Illustration Conference, is putting together an illustrated guide for conference goers, with tips on good eats close by as well as near galleries, museums, and other illustrator haunts.

Humane Society Auction

Local psychobilly band The Bible All-Stars were both the host and featured band at a benefit for the local Humane Society last Saturday. Besides a lot of great music, a silent auction took place, and a collage I'd created especially for the BAS was one of dozens of great items on the block. I'm happy to say that this collage went home with one of their most ardent fans, so a good night was had by all -- little furry animals included.

VOIR

3x3 Magazine will be launching its brand new publication, VOIR, this spring. Issued twice a year, VOIR is devoted entirely to the illustrator's studio, with locations from around the globe. The first issue will feature the studios of Marshall Arisman, Jody Hewgill, Benoît Van Innis, Juliette Borda, Greg Clarke and André Carillho. Sounds both inspiring and intriguing -- it's always cool to see how other artists work! Order your advance copy of VOIR here.
