automatism vintage

I've just opened a brand new online shop! It's called automatism vintage, and it's devoted to vintage art and design books — all selected from my personal collection. I'll be adding to it regularly, so be sure to check back often! Shown below is one of the titles currently available — Scents, from the Chic Simple series published in the early 1990's.

Hour Detroit Magazine

I have an illustration in the February 2010 issue of Hour Detroit, for an article about some of the more sensational unsolved murder cases from 1920s-era Detroit. It was a challenge to illustrate the subject without tipping over into outright goriness, so I went for a more conceptual approach — the faded sepia tones also underlines the time period that these crimes took place. I have a nice credit here, and you can read the article here.

Mercury Lounge Show

The Clutch art collective (of which I'm a member) has had a show up at the Mercury Lounge for the last couple of months or so, finally wrapping up last Friday. I'm happy to say that one of my pieces sold — Timorous Beasties 3! The third in a series of 3 mixed media pieces, Timorous Beasties 3 features an elegant penguin lady wandering blissfully in a dreamlike flowery world. Thanks so much to the anonymous buyer — I hope you enjoy it!

P.S. If you're interested, the other two pieces in the series are still available from the automatism atelier, my online shop.

Here For There

On January 28 I'll be participating in Here For There, a one night only fund raising event for victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Over 100 artists will be donating works, with 100% of the proceeds going towards Haiti relief. Come on out and have fun while supporting a worthy cause! Find out more here. The great poster design is by Michael Zavacky, the illustrator/designer who organized the event.

Update: What a great night! Over $12,000 was raised in the three hours of the event, which will be matched dollar for dollar by the Canadian government! Congrats to Michael for an amazing job, organizing this in just two weeks — I'm so happy I was a part of this great night!

Automatism Atelier for Haiti

From now until February 15 2010, 50% of the money earned from each sale on the automatism atelier will be donated by me to the Red Cross, in support of the Haitian relief effort. This includes the one of a kind mixed media collage pieces, the limited edition letterpress prints and the holiday cards, too. Thanks for helping out.
