Globe and Mail

This illustration accompanied the story Tales From the Dairy Barn, in Monday's Globe and Mail. A newbie milkmaid humorously describes her experiences working with dairy cows (which left her with a rather low opinion of their smarts).

More Magazine

This is one of two illustrations I did for the April issue of More Magazine. It accompanies an article on the current shift towards eating locally and sustainably (rather than relying on exotic produce shipped over long distances), and how people are rediscovering humble native veggies like beets, tomatoes and carrots.

Carleton Now

An illustration for a short story contest in Carleton Now, the faculty and alumni magazine for Carleton University. This was done for one of the three winning entries — a story about a woman on her way to her high school reunion, filled with memories and wondering if she'll finally shake her unwanted nickname of The Saint.

A Designer's Portfolio, 16th Century Style

Fascinating post by the always excellent Creative Review blog about ‘model’ or ‘pattern’ books, used by our design ancestors to show their work to potential clients — and to teach assistants how to reproduce the house styles. These books are extremely rare, but recently the British Library discovered a prime example – the so-called Macclesfield Alphabet Book, dating from c1500. It's filled with wonderful designs for different styles of script, letters, initials and decorative borders. Great post, with lots of great photos, too — read it here. Below is a detail of one of the pages.

Texas Monthly

I have an illustration in the February 2009 issue of Texas Monthly. It's for a very funny article by Sarah Bird, who writes about her experience of eating out at a very nice and very posh restaurant, and her feelings of guilt (eating grandly during an economic recession), her memories of what she ate as a child (definitely non-gourmet) and subsequent feelings of hunger afterwards (a dozen tiny courses left her longing for a solid serving of childhood's mac and cheese).
